The first Monday in May has now come and gone. I don’t know if you all are as excited as I am, but that means we just passed The Met Gala. The Met Gala is an annual celebration of high fashion held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Celebrities come out in wild costuming all inspired by that year’s theme. This year’s theme was Camp, which is a little more misunderstood than past themes.
Many hear “camp” and think nylon tents and sitting around a fire. While that isn’t necessarily “not camp” the theme draws its inspiration from a 1964 essay by Susan Sontag, Notes on Camp. The important thing to note is The Met Gala is all about going big. Below I listed some of my favorites.
One of the co-hosts of the night’s event pulled out all the stops. After a monster 2018/early 2019 the queen of the costume change kicked off the evening with four different outfits and a sixteen minute entrance.
Camp is the art of being extra and this is as extra as it gets. Billy Porter stays stunting.
The songstress went full on Barbie and boy did she nail it. We also gets some notes of Legally Blonde in this look. The Met Gala is the highest of fashion and Musgraves went as maybe the most famous model of all time, Barbie.
Yee Haw! I am here for the cowboy wave. This season and this fit are inspiring me to find ways to work in boots and bandanas all summer long. I may even cop a Stetson.
Everywhere Cardi B shows up she shuts down. Camp is the celebration of all things extra and this Thom Browne dress came complete with over 30,000 feathers. It doesn’t get more extra than that.
Kanye stays riding his own wave, and that wave is on the cutting edge of fashion. On fashion’s biggest night where everyone goes over the top glamorous, Kanye zigs where everyone zags and does understated perfectly. Workwear has been all over streetwear and finding growing popularity and Ye shows it is here to stay by bringing it to the Pink Carpet.
I don’t even know where to begin. The colors are unbelievable. Her shoulders look like they were made out of dragon claws, and I truly believe that Sarosie Ronan killed that dragon with her bare hands to pull this one off. so stunning. Gucci sponsored the event and looks like this proves why that was the correct decision.
The reason for the night. The Queen. Full Stop.
Honorable Mention: Harry Styles, Emily Ratajkowski, Jared Leto, Cole Sprouse, Kendall and Kylie Jenner
